Privacy Statement
Last updated: 2026-09-02 ยท Applies to: Veriprose v1.5.6
This statement is written for teachers and students in plain language. It describes exactly what Veriprose does with data โ including the parts that contact the internet โ so you can make an informed decision before using it.
We have tried to be honest rather than reassuring. Where something is collected, we say so plainly.
- No account, no sign-in, no password. Veriprose never asks who you are.
- Your essay never uploads automatically. Everything you write stays on your own computer until you save the file and hand it to your instructor.
- The editor and Gloss do load a few things from the internet to work and to count usage โ including Google Analytics. This is the main thing to be aware of, and it is described in full below.
- No microphone, camera, or location sensor is ever used.
- Gloss records how you annotate, as totals only. When you write notes about a reading, Veriprose records how much you typed and how fast โ never the words you typed, and never the content you paste. Delete a note and its record goes with it.
- Your sources are not uploaded or collected. PDFs you open in Gloss are read inside your own browser and are never stored or sent anywhere.
- Nothing is kept past the end of the semester. See section 6.
1No accounts or identity
Veriprose has no login, no user accounts, and no password. It does not ask for, and has no need for, your name, email address, student ID, or school.
The only text that identifies anyone is whatever a student chooses to type โ the essay itself and the optional "assignment name" box โ plus whatever name an instructor later attaches to the file on their own. Veriprose does not add identity to it.
2What the editor and Gloss load from the internet
When a student opens the editor (editor.html) or Gloss (gloss.html), the page contacts a few third parties. This happens in the student's browser; Veriprose itself runs no server.
| Service | What they receive | Why |
Google Analytics (googletagmanager.com) โ editor and Gloss |
Your IP address (Google uses it to derive an approximate location), your browser and device type, and basic usage events such as opening the page and how long the session lasts. A random analytics identifier is also stored in your browser so repeat visits can be counted. |
So the site owner can see how often the tools are used. This is genuine usage analytics. |
Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com) โ editor only |
Your IP address and browser type, each time fonts load. |
To display the page typeface. |
Quill editor library (cdn.jsdelivr.net, falling back to unpkg.com) โ editor only |
Your IP address and browser type, when the library loads. |
The text-editing component the editor is built on. |
- The analytics is not academic-integrity data. It is ordinary website usage measurement (like most websites have). It does not send your essay, your annotations, your keystrokes, or your revision history to Google.
- If a school network blocks Google/
googletagmanager.com (some do), the analytics fails silently โ the editor and Gloss still work fully after they've loaded.
- The instructor's review tools (
verifier.html, gloss-verifier.html) do not load Google Analytics. verifier.html loads Google Fonts (IP + browser type to Google); gloss-verifier.html loads nothing external. Any file opened in either is processed entirely in the browser and is not uploaded anywhere. When an instructor opens their own copy of a reading in gloss-verifier.html, that copy is held in memory for as long as the tab is open, so a class can be reviewed against it without re-opening it for every submission. It is the instructor's own file, it is never written to storage, and closing or reloading the page discards it.
3What is recorded inside your .essay and .gloss files
Veriprose's purpose is to record how an essay was written so an instructor can review the process. That information is written into a single .essay file on your own device. It is not transmitted anywhere by Veriprose โ it only reaches your instructor when you submit it.
The PDF export is a separate, smaller artifact: it carries your finished essay, the summary statistics, the revision and paste tables, and the integrity signature โ but not the underlying session recording described below. Before v1.5.6 the PDF also embedded that full recording; it no longer does.
The file contains:
- The essay text and its formatting, including snapshots ("revisions") taken roughly every 60 seconds.
- A full edit history of the essay โ every insertion and deletion you make in the editor, with timestamps, including text you later deleted or changed. This is enough for the instructor's review tool to replay the writing session from start to finish, and that is its purpose. This history covers only what happens inside the essay editor: Veriprose cannot see and does not record anything you type in other windows, tabs, or apps โ no passwords, no searches, nothing outside the essay itself.
- Paste events, including the text that was pasted, with timestamps.
- Typing-rhythm statistics โ the time intervals between keystrokes, used to distinguish human typing rhythms from automated input.
- Counts of corrections (Backspace / Delete / Cut), total typed and pasted characters, and active session time.
- A window focus/blur timeline โ timestamps of when the editor window was switched away from and returned to (e.g. alt-tab). Only the times are recorded, never what you did in other windows or apps.
- A cryptographic signature (HMAC-SHA256). This is a tamper-evidence check for the file's own contents. It is not an identifier and contains no personal information.
Gloss sessions (.gloss files)
Gloss is the tool for annotating assigned readings. When you export, it writes a single .gloss file on your own device, containing:
- The notes you wrote, and for each one the passage you highlighted โ the quoted words plus a short run of text either side, which is how a highlight finds its passage again if the source changes.
- The highlight colour and any tags you put on a note. These are yours โ you choose them โ and they are included so your instructor sees the same distinctions you made while reading.
- A list of your sources: title, type, when you added it, and a fingerprint of the file or text. The fingerprint lets an instructor confirm you annotated the assigned copy. It cannot be turned back into the source, and the source itself is not included in the file.
- Activity totals for each note โ how many keystrokes and corrections it took, how the gaps between keystrokes were distributed across four speed bands, how long you spent actively working on it, and how many separate sittings you edited it in. Active time stops when you switch tabs or applications, and after about a minute of no activity, so a note left open while you are away is not counted as time spent.
- Paste events for each note: the time, and how many characters were pasted. The pasted text itself is never recorded.
- A signature, the same tamper-evidence check described above.
Two things are deliberately absent. Gloss does not keep a keystroke-by-keystroke record of your notes, so what you typed cannot be reconstructed from it โ unlike the essay editor, which does keep a full edit history and says so above. And it does not include the source document. An instructor reviewing your .gloss file supplies their own copy of the reading.
This is behavioural data about the writing session. It is not hidden: the instructor's review tool shows all of it, and a plain-language explanation of every check is built into that tool.
4Data stored on your own device
To protect your work, the editor saves a small amount of data in your browser's local storage on your own computer:
- An auto-recovery snapshot of your in-progress essay, so a crash, closed tab, or accidental refresh does not lose your work. It is updated as you write and offered back to you the next time you open the editor.
- Your theme preference (light / dark / system).
- For Gloss, your annotation session โ sources, notes, and activity totals โ so closing the tab does not lose your work.
- For Gloss, the text of articles you pasted, so your highlights still appear in context when you come back.
PDFs are never stored. Neither the file nor the text extracted from it is kept in your browser. When you return to a session, Gloss asks you to open the PDF again from your own computer, and checks it is the same file. This is why re-opening is necessary rather than merely tidy.
This data never leaves your device and is not sent to Veriprose, the instructor, or any third party. You can remove it at any time by clearing your browser's site data for the page, or by using the editor's Clear action.
5What Veriprose does not do
- It does not require or collect names, emails, student IDs, or passwords.
- It does not use your microphone, camera, or device location/GPS.
- It does not upload your essay, drafts, or typing data to any server โ there is no Veriprose server. The only automatic internet contact is the third-party services in section 2.
- It does not track you across other websites, and it sets no advertising cookies. (The Google Analytics identifier described in section 2 is used only to count Veriprose usage.)
- The instructor's review tool does not upload the files it reviews.
- Gloss does not upload, copy, or transmit the sources you read. PDFs are opened inside your browser; no part of a PDF is sent anywhere, including to Veriprose or your instructor.
- Gloss does not record the words you type into a note, and does not record the content of anything you paste into one.
6For schools and instructors
- If your institution's policy requires it, you can block Google /
googletagmanager.com / gstatic.com at the network level; the editor and Gloss degrade gracefully and keep working without analytics.
- Because every Veriprose page is a single self-contained HTML file, a school can host its own copy. A technically able administrator can also remove the Google Analytics block and serve the fonts/editor library locally to eliminate the third-party requests in section 2 entirely. (Doing so changes only what loads from the internet โ it does not change how the
.essay/.gloss file works.)
- Retention. Data collected through Veriprose is kept only until the end of the semester in which it was submitted, so that instructors can complete grading and resolve any questions about a submission. After that it is deleted. Because there is no Veriprose server, this applies to the copies an instructor holds โ submitted
.essay and .gloss files and anything derived from them. Anything left on a student's own device is under the student's control and can be cleared at any time.
- Please share this statement with students before asking them to use the tool, and treat the integrity signals as a starting point for a conversation, never as proof on their own.
7Changes and contact
This statement describes Veriprose v1.5.6. If the data behaviour changes in a later version, this statement will be updated to match. Questions should go to the instructor or administrator who provided Veriprose to you.
